Slowly getting better.
I took out the soap, but still have dry skin under the cream/glycerin lather. I think I'm just too used to the ol' disposable. I used to power thru with that thing so fast nothing even had a chance to dry out.
I've begun to see why some people strop midway through the shave. I decided to try to tackle the goatee/neck areas (coup d'maitre as it's called). Had trouble as usual but kept going. Then decided to stop, strop again, and it did make a difference. Maybe even start with the coup d'maitre next time, since it's the toughest hair and when the blade is sharpest.
This was at least more encouragement that my strop technique must be somewhat decent.
